Curtain Seam Guide:
When & Why Fabric Joins Are Used

For extra‑wide curtains, fabric width limitations may require a vertical seam. Below you’ll find clear rules based on header style and finished length, plus how seams look and how to avoid them for a cleaner look.

📏 Seam rules by header style

✨ No pleated headers
  • Grommet
  • Tab top
  • Rod pocket
  • Back tab
  • 4-in-1
  • Flat hooks
📐 Finished length > 102" → max width without seam = 100"
📏 Finished length ≤ 102"No seam needed (any width)
✨ Pleated headers
  • Pinch pleat
  • Tailor pleat
  • Inverted box pleat
  • Goblet
  • Tape Pleat
📐 Finished length > 102" → max width without seam = 56"
📏 Finished length ≤ 102"No seam required (any width)
⚠️ Fabric width variation note: The 102" threshold may shift slightly depending on the fabric’s usable width (different mill runs, specialty fabrics). Not every fabric shares the exact same limitation. For precise confirmation, feel free to contact our team.

🔍 How a seam looks (front & back)

We prioritize vertical seams along the width direction to add necessary width while keeping drape natural. Below you can see the seam appearance on both sides of the drapery.

Drapery vertical seam back side
📸 Back side — neat & reinforced
* Vertical seam runs along the width extension, professionally finished to be durable and discreet.

✨ Best practice: Avoid seams for a cleaner aesthetic

While seams are structurally sound and invisible from a distance, a seamless look is always more elegant. Here's how to skip seams entirely:
➤ If your desired finished width exceeds the no-seam limit, split the oversized single panel into two separate curtain panels (e.g., two drapery pieces). This completely eliminates the need for a vertical seam while covering the same window span.

📌 Example: You need a finished curtain size of 120"W × 110"L with a no-pleat header (length >102"). The seamless max width is 100", so a single 120" panel would require a seam.
Seamless alternative: Order two panels of 60"W × 110"L instead. No seam needed, perfect coverage, and easier to draw.
💡 Splitting into two panels often looks more balanced, simplifies installation, and completely avoids fabric joins.

🧵 When a seam is truly needed

If you need an ultra-wide single panel that surpasses our seamless width limits (100” for no-pleat, 56” for pleated styles when length >102”), we will add a vertical seam in the width direction. We carefully match patterns and use industry-leading stitching so the seam remains subtle.
